Hey Buck!
I'm Habin. Pronounced Hah-bin. Hah-bee for short.
I currently identify as a 'visual designer slash art director specializing in motion design and branding'. Which is a mouthful to say. Especially with an accent that’s been aptly described as Mexikorean—a vocal fusion that I acquired from growing up in Korea and getting down in LA. So when your site listed that the studio is looking for Designermators to join your team in one of your job posts, I was like ‘ohhhhhhhh that’s what I am.’ How conveniently pronounceable. This was also an exciting discovery because I’ve been following Buck's work since your early days, and seeing how you've constantly adapted and re-shaped into a well-rounded creative studio with a strong motion design team has been really exciting and inspiring.
Until this March (RIP, the world we knew), I had a blast working full-time as a Motion Designer and a Junior Art Director at Stink Studios Los Angeles and New York. Stink was at a transitional phase when I joined the team, morphing into a full stack creative studio from a production house. The majority of the small creative team were young designers, developers and producers with relatively little experience in full scope projects with big clients. I didn't have a senior motion designer. There wasn't a playbook of how to tackle big scale projects from newer business sectors like cannabis, VR, and interactive social campaigns. We didn't have all the tools to make things we wanted to make. The studio was growing at a rapid speed, and I quickly realized that faster computers or octane render subscriptions definitely weren’t priorities. However, I learned and experienced things I never would have been able to experience anywhere else, and also had lots of great (and surreal) opportunities.
Some highlights are:
→ I animated the entire AICP title sequence package on my own on a MacBook Pro default model. I had a week to animate these 25 individual animated sequences, sync with music and also post edit with VFX. The computer almost exploded but we delivered in time.
→ An animated prototype pitched during the Beats³ Camo project led to a full-blown campaign film featuring A$AP Ferg's new album.
→ Sent off a wardrobe mood board and art department prop designs for Tinder's campaign shoot in Mexico City overnight while a 3D model for the Beats campaign was rendering on a render farm simultaneously.
→ List of achievements, education, softwares and programs, and hobbies of mine
Maybe it’s because all I’ve ever done is shift gears throughout my career but I’m actually really excited to see how brands will redirect themselves as a response to the post-pandemic lifestyle. There’s so much potential for the motion design community to connect people in the absence of other mediums of expression. I genuinely love the work you do, and the responsive path you've been taking to ever-changing platforms and contexts. I'd love to hear more about how you are envisioning the way creative agencies will reshape in the face of our newly defined lifestyle, and would be so proud to contribute to your team of Designermators to work on your exciting future plans.
I’m currently freelancing in Brooklyn, collaborating with fellow quarantined creatives, watching a lot of tutorials, and researching the best method to resurrect a frozen bagel.
Does next week work for you to chat?
Update: I have found the best method to resurrect a frozen bagel.
